My Mother-in-law's 1950's Atlanta home is a great reminder of how kitchens were not that long ago. Kitchens were a room for messy work and were hidden away from the rest of the house. Attitudes about kitchens have been changing and more functions and more style have been added to today's kitchens. Kitchens have become hubs for modern families.  As a result, kitchen remodeling ranks among the most popular of home improvement projects.

Step one is to formulate a good kitchen-remodeling plan and budget is a good place to start.  For example, if you're looking for a partial remodel, focus on the countertops and backsplash.  That will give your kitchen a fresh new look at a lower cost.

Dream a little! Gather ideas, collect pictures from magazines, talk to friends and visit those that have had work done recently. Compile a list along with pictures, drawings, and samples of all the features and functions you want in your new kitchen.

Style

What is your style? It is important to know which decoration style you prefer so you can choose the appropriate components and create the right look for your home.

Contemporary

Contemporary kitchens have sleek, smooth lines and a lack of ornamentation.  The emphasis is on simplicity and functionality.  Colors are generally variations of one shade, but may be punctured by a sharply contrasting color.  Finishes alternate between high-gloss and matte.  Countertops are usually fine-grained with little decorations.

Eclectic
This style has a freestyle approach combining several styles.  The emphasis is on creating a unique individual look.  The colors are contrasting, spirited and unexpected with finishes that may be dramatic but extremely harmonies.





Traditional
